Land Grabbing
Jabez was five and Esther was a baby when their father passed away, leaving the mother to care for her six children alone. She had land to farm, thankfully, but that was only enough to provide food for the children.
Adding to the stress and grief this family experienced, her in-laws began forcefully taking the food they harvested, leaving them with nothing. Then, family members tried to grab her land, pushing her away to find another way to survive. Unfortunately, this is a common problem with 40% of widows experiencing the threat of their land being taken away (International Justice Mission). For already vulnerable women, losing their land and livelihood has devastating consequences. Thankfully, this mother was able to solicit the help of her clan leaders, who came to her rescue.
In 2015, Hope Africa International heard the story of this sweet family and stepped in to sponsor Jabez and Esther, providing school fees, uniforms, shoes, medical care and hope. Our Ugandan staff have also provided godly wisdom and guidance for the mother, helping her as she navigated the difficulties of raising children on her own. This is the beauty of Hope Africa, as we do much more than simply provide for basic needs. When a child is sponsored their lives and their families are transformed as a result of the countless hours our Ugandan staff invest in them.
Now, Jabez has just one more year of high school left and Esther has one more year of primary school. Their mother is deeply grateful for what Hope Africa has done in their lives, helping them to rise above their circumstances and have hopeful futures.
Giving Tuesday, an international day of generosity, is on November 28th. Our goal is to raise $5000 for our Kapchorwa sponsorship program and $5000 for our K&K School program. These donations help us to bridge the gap between sponsorship donations and extra needs for the children.
